I’m passionate about design. I’m a rare mix of designer-researcher-entrepreneur, and received my PhD in design thinking and healthcare. This work resulted in an innovative service design strategy for improving the patient communication experience in breast cancer detection in the US and UK.

My goal is to merge design and business in my own practice and university teaching. I consult in service design and communication design.

Experiencia

Founder/Director

Worldwide Breast Cancer

– actualidad (14 años 1 mes)

The mission of the charity Worldwide Breast Cancer is to help save lives around the globe using clever, thoughtful design to communicate health information. Design is at the core of the charity, with the priority focused on disseminating education. So far it’s available in 11 languages, educated over 2 million people and works with disparate health populations. #knowyourlemons is a campaign that explains using the simple visual metaphor of lemons what breast cancer looks like, feels like and how to detect it. It works for any age, literacy level and ethnic background. The campaign has been used by the Turkish government, the Samoan Cancer Society, Japan’s Run for the Cure, Rotary Club (Gujarat, India) and every continent. From hospitals in Jeddah, to health outreach programs in Honduras and local clinics in Kenya, it would be difficult to name the 750+ organizations and health campaigners around the world using the campaign to help patients identify, report and find cancer at more early, curable stages.

Currently working (2015) on a project with the mbcalliance.org to improve the experience of diagnosis and treatment planning with Stage IV breast cancer patients using visual tools in clinics.

Module Leader for MA in Creative Economy

Kingston University

(6 años 1 mes)

I teach Masters students how to use design thinking in business and absolutely love it. Students over the course of 8 months create products/services and turn them into businesses. My role was to guide them in finding user needs, establishing their branding and marketing strategies and using technology to build their market. Worked with Masters students in every continent on the planet (except Antarctica) which made for a rich and diverse environment.

Principle Design Researcher

Kingston University

(1 año 8 meses)

Design thinking. Multidisciplinary Teams. Web technology. It was my job to figure out how to combine these three to understand how different disciplines work together for innovation. This involved observational research, 800 blog posts, teaching design thinking to students and discovering what skills designers contribute for success.

Director, Royal American Design Program

Utah State University

(7 meses)

Developed and led a summer abroad university program for 25 students in London and Paris. Responsibilities included teaching courses, overseeing a large budget, arranging transportation, accommodation, tickets and passes for teaching in the wild. It was a major success, and proves that only a truly organised and motivated person would dream this up, make it happen and survive!

Creative Director

Center for Open and Sustainable Learning

(3 años 1 mes)

Worked on an amazing project with amazing people to spread knowledge through web 2.0 technology using Creative Commons licensing. My job was to manage the branding, interface design, marketing materials and other creative work in this large project.

This included software development, creating branding guidelines and convincing people that copyleft policies in education (and online) were the future and that social media would catch on.

Mindfog Media Design

(6 años 1 mes)

Designed branding, packaging, websites and other materials for local and national clients including Target, Sears, Denise Austin and others. This included presenting work to head buyers, developing a family brand and liasing with print production in China.

Very adept at working with clients and designing for digital and print media, and was a very successful business. Only gave it up because I moved to London to pursue a PhD in Design.

Adjunct Professor

Utah State University

(6 años)

In addition to being a Creative Director at COSL, I taught 13 different design courses in graphics, web, animation in design and interior design departments (specialising in typography). Led over 300 critiques and taught some amazing students. Responsible for lecturing, syllabus, grading and technical direction.

These years of teaching have honed my art direction skills as well as motivating designers and a team to meet targets and find creative solutions.

Designed a global branding strategy for breast cancer communication campaigns in print (poster series) and web (4 websites tested and designed). Explored patient needs on cognitive, emotional and physical levels, developed a design thinking process for systems analysis and wrote a 70,000 word dissertation explaining my process and results. Work also involved user analysis, empathic human centered design methods and learning just about everything about breast cancer screening and detection.
